Navigating the Challenges of End-of-Life Care: A Personal Perspective from a Young Healthcare Professional

End-of-life care presents unique challenges for both caregivers and individuals receiving care. The emotional toll and the profound sense of loneliness experienced during this time can significantly impact health and well-being. The following personal perspective from a dedicated volunteer and young healthcare professional sheds light on these challenges and the profound impact of volunteer work.

“I feel fortunate to be able to take part in Cardinal Hospice Care’s volunteer program. Navigating end-of-life care is challenging for caregivers and for the individual – it can be a very lonely time. Loneliness is one of the main factors leading to a decline in health as we age and I’ve wanted to help with this health crisis. Working as a Physician Assistant in Internal Medicine and Primary Care, I see the toll that loneliness has on health on a daily basis. I was hoping this work would be impactful, but I wasn’t sure. Starting a conversation with my first patient as a volunteer I asked, ‘How is your day going today?’ She responded, ‘Better now that you’re here.’ This is all the reassurance I needed to confirm this work will be valued and is important.”
