Spotlight on Vanessa Dorsey, BSN, RN: The Power of Human Connection in Hospice Nursing
As part of Hospice & Palliative Care Awareness Month, we’re pleased to also spotlight Vanessa Dorsey, BSN, RN, Case Manager at Cardinal Hospice. Vanessa’s journey into hospice nursing began with her experience in the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit, where she guided families through end-of-life decisions. This experience led her to hospice, where she focuses on supporting patients and families through compassionate, tailored care.
“For many, hospice care begins earlier than expected,” Vanessa explains. “This gives me time to connect with my patients and their families, understanding their goals and wishes for this chapter of life.” Vanessa emphasizes safety, comfort, and enjoyment of life as guiding principles, working with a team that continuously adjusts care to meet each patient’s unique needs. “Our role is to meet patients and families where they are—physically, emotionally, and spiritually,” she shares.
One memory that stands out to Vanessa is of a patient named David, a man of few words who loved Earth, Wind & Fire. Over time, they would sit together listening to music, creating a bond through these shared moments. One day, David handed her a note that simply read, “I love you.” Vanessa keeps this note as a reminder of the meaningful connections that can be built, even in a short time.
Dispelling Myths About Hospice
For Vanessa, part of her work involves correcting misunderstandings about hospice care. “There’s a common fear that entering hospice means all hope is gone,” she says. “But hospice is about enhancing the quality of life with a focus on personal goals. When hospice care starts early, it opens the door to a more vibrant experience, allowing patients to focus on what brings them comfort and joy.”
Vanessa’s approach captures the spirit of Cardinal Hospice’s mission, demonstrating that hospice care is not only about medical support but also about meaningful connections and personalized care.
